I understand the case you're making, but I have to balance it against something I also value - anti-surveillance.
By default, Medium (and other platforms) add trackers to URLs, meaning that if you just add clickable links, any reader who clicks them generates surveillance data for the platform.
I think this is fucking awful, so I include the text of the link so that users can copy and paste them, which evades this tracking.
Unfortunately, this creates tension with some screen readers.
However, I know that the screen-readers people with visual impairments use are smart enough to skip over URLs rather than narrating them. Perhaps you could investigate those?
